Nefretete A. Smith

Executive Officer

Nefretete A. Smith serves as Supervisory Counsel of the Policy Unit in the Legal Division at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). In that role, she leads a team responsible for developing and analyzing agency policy and interpreting laws and regulations governing consumer protection and the operations of insured depository institutions. With over 15 years of experience advising federal banking agencies and senior policymakers, she has shaped regulatory initiatives spanning deposit insurance, bank supervision, consumer protection, emerging financial technology, executive compensation, and corporate governance.

Nefretete holds a Juris Doctor from American University Washington College of Law, a Bachelor’s in Finance from Florida State University, and is an alumna of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. She is licensed to practice in Maryland, and also is a Certified Knowledge Manager.

She has been an active member of the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association, Inc. since 2018, and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Women’s Committee.
